It is found in alluvial deposits, metamorphic and igneous rocks, where it exists with other corundum verities and gem material. Its major characteristic is its excellent hardness which is 9 on Mohs scale of hardness. Trace elements present during gem formation effect it’s colour, and in the case of blue sapphire, iron and titanium are the trace elements, which causes blue colour in sapphires.
